A

Allegory (From the greek=allegoria) - A metaphor, a tale or story used to ilustrate a point.

Animism - The action of a medium disseminating his own ideas, memories and thoughts while in trance as if this information was coming from a Spirit. Animism may happen without the knowledge of the medium himself if he is not well enough educated in the subject.

Angel - In its orthodoxal concept, this term is not accepted by Spiritism as it refers to beings whom were created as perfect and living in eternal happiness, contrary to men. This assumption would make God unjust. (See Guardian Angels and Enlightened Spirits).

Apocryphal Communications - Dubious communications; Spirit communications that appear to come from enlightened spirits but actually come from spirits who either want to confuse or control a group of people. (See The Medium's Book - Chapter XXXI)

B

Bi-corporeity (double body) - A natural phenomena of visual manifestation. The spiritual body (perispirit) of a person appears to other people in a different location from where the person's physical body is. (See The Medium's Book - Chapter VII)

Bonus-hour - a type of currency(money) utilized in "Astral City", the spiritual city described by the spirit Andre Luiz in his book "Astral City" which was translated from the Portuguese "Nosso Lar" - "Our Home"

C

Capela - A star in the "Cocheiro" constelation. While most of the population of Capella took a step up in the stages of evolution, many of its inhabitants were not moraly compatible with the new situation of their fellow inhabitants. Being highly advanced intellectually, they were brougth (reeincanated) to Earth as part of the early Hindu, Jewish and Egiptian people, bosting the progress of humanity and compensating for their misconduct of the past.

Death - the process of liberation of the spirit from the material body. After death, the spirit preserves its individuality, that is, all the psychological features that characterized it as the living person before.

Disembodied Spirits - the general name given to the spirit in its original state, meaning a spirit without a body (here understood as the material body).

E

Ectoplasm (from the latin ektos=outside, plasma=formed or created) - a substance existent in the human body and utilized by the spirits so they can materialize. Only humans who possess a very specific type of mediumship - physical effects mediunship - are capable of donating enough ectoplasm in order for a materialization to occurr.

Embodied spirit - a synonym for incarnate spirit. The state of a spirit during a reincarnation. Also known as one's soul.

Enlightened Spirits - Spirits in higher stages in evolution. They are in-charge of many aspects of our lives. Some oversee works of religious groups, some governments, others are even responsible for entire solar systems. They help us with their thoughts of wisdom but under no circumstances interfere with our free-will. (See free-will)

Erraticity - the state of errant spirits, that is, disembodied spirits, during the interval between two material existences. It is not specific to either a harmonic state of mind or place in the cosmos, but to a stage in which the spirit is not encarnated.

Evocation - The act of evoking or calling the spirit or spirits with whom we desire to communicate . Allan Kardec advised us to remain skeptic to what spirits actually answer our "call", meaning that they could be impostors trying to persuade us into doing wrong or simply playing with us. Free Will - A Divine Law which states that spirits have the freedom to choose between right and wrong. No enlightened spirit will ever interfere with this right, even by knowing that our choices will bring suffering to us and others.

Guardian Angels - Spirits who are dedicated to help us in our incarnate state. They are usually our loved ones from past lives. These spirits are not yet perfect and may indeed still have to reincarnate themselves.

Incarnate spirit - a spirit with a material body, living on Earth or in other planets. Opposite of disembodied spirit.

Joking Spirits - Those spirits who spend their time misleading people and mediums who communicate with them and are less prepared to differentiate them from serious
and enlightened spirits. They usually do not mean to harm anyone, unlike rebel spirits who are looking for revenge of some kind.

M

Magnatized Water - Whater saturated with beneficial fluids originated in the spiritual world under the guidance of Spirit Benefactors. It is commonly used as a complement to the pass (healing) as a means to revitalize the human body.

Material body - as the name suggests, the material part of an incarnate spirit. The immaterial body is called the "perispirit".

Materialization - name given to the phisical phenomenon produced by materialization mediums. During a materialization, a spirit acquires a pseudo-body and makes itself materially visible. Ectoplasm, substance existent in the humam bodies is used by the spirits so they can materialize. Not only spirits can be materialized, but also ordinary objects (the transport of objects to a closed environment occurs by means of materialization).

Medium - A person who serves as an intermediary between spirits and people.

Mediumship - the faculty(ability) of mediums. Also called channelling in some places. There is a large number of types of mediumships which the interested reader can find it in "The mediums´ book" by Allan Kardec.

Perispirit - (perí in greek, or surrounding) name given to the semi-material body of the spirit. It has material properties that can be perceived by mediums. In incarnate spirits, it is the link or intermediary body between the spirit and the material body. In disembodied spirits, it constitutes the fluidic body.

Physical effects mediums - an exceptional category of mediums who auxiliate spirits in their materialization and in the transport and materialization of objects.

Pneumatography - name given to a rare type of mediumship in which written communication of spirits are obtained by "direct writing", the writing of messages on a paper or any other object without the participation of a medium or the need of any writting object.

Psychic phenomenon - a general name given to a class of phenomena produced by mediums. They can be divided into physical and intellectual effects. They generally involve the influence of disembodied spirits.

Psycography - name given to a special type of mediums (writting mediums) who write under the guidance or influence of the spirits. The spirit commands the hand of the medium as it writes.

Physical effects - name given to material manifestation of the spirits such as movement of inert bodies, noises, appearences, smells or materializations. These cannot be produced unless a physical effects medium is utilized by the spirits. See also intelectual effects.

Q

Quintessence - More purified, less heavy, softer. The perispirit is formed of matter that is more quintessenced than the physical body. (See The Medium's Book - Chapter VIII)

Rebel Spirits - Spirits who maintain feelings of hate against either people, other spirits or even God. They are usually responsible for obsession and spend their time and energy trying to harm and destroy their the ones they hate.

Reincarnation - return of the spirit to the material body for the sake of spiritual improvement. The purpose of reincarnation is "purification, to redress previous mistakes thus generating human progress. Without reincarnation, God would be unjust. Reincarnation is a mechanism of spirit evolution.

Sematology(in greek semá=signal) - a language of signals. Name given to the communication of spirits by the movement of static bodies.

Soul - An incarnated Spirit.

Spirit - The intelligent beings of the Creation. They constitute the population of the Universe. One of the three elements of the Universe, God, Spirits and Matter. (See The Spirit's Book - Second Book - Chapter I)

Spiritism - in a simplified definition, it is the set of beliefs or principles founded upon the existence of spirits and their manifestation. The name was thought out by Allan Kardec. (See The Spirit's Book - Introduction - Item I)

Spiritist - a believer in Spiritism. There are several categories of spiritists. A good spiritist is defined by his actions of goodness towards all and determination to change himself in pursuit of perfection. The name was thought out by Allan Kardec. (See The Spirit's Book - Introduction - Item I)

Spiritualism - as opposed to materialism (academical definition): Belief in the existence of the spiritual (non material) counterpart of a being. According to this meaning Spiritualism is the base of all religions. As a religion: English name given to the movement initiated in the XIX century founded on spirit manifestation. Contrary to Spiritism, the Spiritualism movement did not accepted reincarnation as a natural way of spirit evolution. Nowadays many Spiritualists do embrace reincarnation as a fact of life.

Spiritualist - a believer in Spiritualism and/or anyone who believes in the existence of a spiritual being besides the material ones.

Tiptology (in greek tuptós=beat) - a language of beats. Another name given to a kind of spirit communication systems using beats or other noises. Such as the ones that occurred with the Fox Sisters.

The Universal Cosmic Fluid - The elementary primitive matter whose modifications and transformations constitute the variety of bodies of Nature. (See Genesis - Chapter XIV)

Xenoglossy - name given to a type of mediumship in which communication of spirits are given in languages unknown to the medium. The communication can be written or spoken.

Z

Zones - Each spirit inhabits a different spiritual zone. The more enlightened ones are said to be in the superior zones in contrast to the inferior zones where the less enlightened spirits are.

Zoophyte - Any of various invertebrate animals resembling a plant such as a sea anemone or coral or sponge. This term is used in Spiritism when studying the progression of the spirit throught all mineral, vegetable and animal kingdoms.
